Yay, you're going to embroider cross stitch with one of the modern embroidery kits from the shop! In the two videos below, you'll learn all the important things to keep in mind when starting your embroidery kit. This way, you can be sure your embroidery will be a success and you'll make the best use of your thread and fabric.

If you're new to embroidery, you might feel a little overwhelmed when you open your embroidery kit. But don't worry! The videos show you how to look at the pattern, where to start on the fabric, and how to embroider the cross stitch.

Lesson 1: The Preparation - Avoid Making These Common Mistakes

Key tips from the first video in a nutshell:

  • Make sure you have enough light, sit down quietly with a cup of tea and lay out everything from your embroidery kit on the table in front of you.

  • Read the instructions that come with your embroidery kit carefully so you know exactly how many strands you 'll be embroidering with. This way, you'll be sure to get the right amount of yarn for your project.

  • Some threads don't require splitting, such as the Riolis embroidery kits with wool/acrylic thread, all cushion kits, and the DMC kits with Perlé thread. For these threads, the rule is: 1 skein = 1 strand. Most kits come with splittable thread, in which case the rule is: 1 skein = 6 strands, and you'll need to split it.

  • Always start your embroidery in the center of the fabric . Fold the fabric twice to determine the center. Check the pattern to see where the center is. This is where you'll begin your embroidery.
  • Make sure your fabric is positioned correctly before you begin. Does the fabric have long and short sides? Place the long side in the same direction as the long side of your design. This way, you'll be sure your design will fit perfectly on the fabric.

Lesson 2: Embroidering the first cross stitches

Key tips from the second video in a row:

  • Does your pattern include cross stitch and backstitch (the outlines)? You start with the cross stitches. Add the outlines last. Some embroidery kits include beads, which you add last.

  • Are you planning to frame your embroidery in a picture frame? It's best to avoid buttons on the back of your work. Otherwise, you might see little bumps under the fabric once it's framed, which would be a real shame!

  • Make sure all your crosses are facing the same direction , then your embroidery will look very neat.

  • Die -hard embroiderers say the back of your embroidery should look just as neat as the front. Don't worry about that at first; it'll work out just fine. Practice makes perfect!
