Organizing embroidery thread tips

Everyone organizes their embroidery thread in their own way. I now have five storage boxes full of embroidery thread. I've changed how I organize them several times over the years. This is what I find to be the most effective way so far:

• Use plastic wrap-around cards if you want them to last a long time. Cardboard wrap-around cards are easier to write the color number on, but will become flimsy or tear after regular use.
• With the DMC stickers you can stick the color number on the card.
• You can wrap your embroidery thread around the cards by hand, or make it easier with a thread winder .
• Most embroiderers organize their thread wrap cards by color number . This makes it easy to find a specific color number when working on a pattern.
• If the specific color numbers aren't as important to you, you can choose to store your yarn by color family . You can find the color families on the DMC color chart .
• Going on vacation or traveling? It's handy to take the colors you need with you in a small yarn box or on a metal ring.
